Harry Van Drielen
Harry S. Van Drielen, a retired railroad engineer, died Friday in a Portola hospital after a long illness.
He was born in Elko Jan. 7, 1902, and started working for the Western Pacific Railroad at the age of 16. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War I.
During the 1930s he was a painting contractor in Berkeley and later worked as a traveling salesman. In 1954 he moved to Portola and ressumed work for the Western Pacific Roalroad.
He was a member of the United Transportation Union, Local 800, and belonged to the Rosicrucians.
He is survived by his widow, Jane, sons William and Harry Jr. of Reno, Thomas of Redding, Calif., Ralph of Canada, and a stepson, Keith Herrell of Torrance, Calif.
Also surviving are daughters Nanette Bradley of Reno, Mary Ann Van Drielen of Berkeley, and stepdaughter Kay Batchelor of Paradise, Calif., a sister, Mary Haliday of Garden Grove, Calif., and 22 grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Community Methodist Church in Portola with inurnment in the Masonic Memorial Gardens in Reno. Manni Funeral Home of Portola was in charge of arrangements.
